Needles-n-Pins Stitcheries: Creating An Outdoor Herb Garden
This time of year gardens are growing everywhere. There are flower gardens and vegetable gardens just growing in the sunshine. So how about a herb garden. I know many people grow their own herbs and my daughter just started a small one herself. I saw this posting the other day and thought I would share it with you so you can get some ideas of starting your own outside herb garden. There are several ideas on this posting from TheIdeaRoom.

Needles-n-Pins Stitcheries: Vintage Garden Implements
Now that we have the flower gardens planned out for planting we need to put some "art" in them. I love antique implements. I use to have so many of them in my yard before we moved. I planted flowers in so many of them like cream separators, wash tubs, buckets, etc. I even had a claw foot tub that I planted flowers in. Oh yes.....the good old days. :)
Well today I thought I would show you some implements and things you can use in your garden and yards. Where would find some of those items...of course....let's visit Etsy to see what we can find.
We need to start with some color for our flower garden. This recycled garden tiller head from NafeIronWorksDesign has lots of color to add to all the colors of your garden.
Old wash tubs always make great pots for flowers. I had several of them and lined them up around my deck. Over at TangerineFig you can find this really neat wash tub. I like the way this tub flairs out and is not the usual straight up and down.
I am sure many of you have seen or used these old whiskey barrels for planting flowers. They make a great pot for flowers. KarensChicNShabby has this one available.
Another good item to use for flower pots are the old vintage water cans. You can use them for watering your flowers if you want, but they also make great flower pots. I like this one from MilkweedVintageHome because it also has a red sprinkler head that would stick out past all the flowers.
There are endless items you can use for flower pots. I could go on and on and on showing you them all. I just love to put flowers in different things. It always adds a little something to the flower garden. Now...get busy planting those flowers. :)

Needles-n-Pins Stitcheries: Let's Plant Those Gardens
Now that Easter is over, and I hope everyone had a wonderful day, it is time to start thinking about those gardens. Flower gardens and vegetable gardens both need some planning. So let's get started.....
Some people have lots of room to have gardens and others don't. If you are limited on space or just want some cute ideas for containers check out Listotic for some really neat ideas for planting flowers and even an herb garden.
Now if you are like me and getting to old to crawl around on the ground to tend your garden why not try a raised bed garden. My brother does lots of these as he doesn't have a lot of room in his back yard. It is amazing how much he does grow in one of these. The The Owner Builder Network has plans for building this raised garden.
Some of you, like me, live in the north country so you have to take extra steps to have flowers and vegetables. The ground doesn't warm up like other places so it is hard to grow these so most of us have greenhouses. Over at Living Green And Frugally you can learn how to build a simple greenhouse. Check it out. :)
And lastly we need to know how to plant our gardens. And as you can see from Moms Need To Know there are some plants that don't like each other so we need to know how to plant them so they play nicely together. :)
Hopefully this helps you get in the mood for planning those gardens. I have a few more weeks before I can plant anything up here. Usually around Memorial Day is when I can put my flowers out. :)

Needles-n-Pins Stitcheries: Wintering Plants and Gardens
Now that fall is here and some of us need to get our gardens and flowers ready for old man winter, I thought I would share some ideas on how to get those gardens ready for the winter season and bring some of those plants inside.
Many people talk about bring their geraniums inside for the winter. I don't have any geraniums, but several people I know do bring them inside. The Weekend Gardner has the information for you to do this.
Now many of you have vegetable and flower gardens over the summer that need to get ready for the long sleep ahead. The Farmers Almanac has some really good tips for this.
Most of us in the north country have greenhouse for our growing of vegetable. If you are one of these people here is some ideas from Experimental Homesteader on getting your greenhouse ready for the winter.
Last but not least....let's not forget your lawn. In order for your lawn to make it through the winter and be ready for the spring there are a few things that will help it make it through the winter that you can do and Do It Yourself has all the tips for you.
So whether you have vegetable garden, flowers or lawns all these need to be prepared for the winter. I don't know if I am quite ready to be talking winter here tho.........I think I will enjoy more of the fall for now.

Needles-n-Pins Stitcheries: Let's Plant Those Gardens
Well May is here and it is time to really get busy and plant those gardens. Whether you are a flower gardener or a vegetable gardener there is planning to do. I collected a few tutorials from Pinterest to give you a few ideas on how to plant that garden this year. When I was searching for these tutorials I was amazed at all the different ways to garden. Here are a few I found.....
If you need to have a raised bed for your flowers or vegetables (which I would need) The Home Depot has a great tutorial on how to build one of these.
Do you grow herbs? Do you have a limited amount of space to grow your herbs? How about this cute idea from Home Talk.
Do you have a little place on your deck or porch that needs a little sprucing up with some flowers? Try this idea from Melissa atThe Inspired Room.

I think it looks amazing and would love to have something like this in my yard, but then the moose would just eat the flowers and drink the water! LOL! Flea Market Gardening has the instructions on how to do this.

Needles-n-Pins Stitcheries: Some Tools For Gardening
For a lot of people next month starts the gardening season and to garden "properly" you need to have the right tools. Whether it is shovels, rakes, buckets or wheelbarrows you have to have tools. Like my dad always told me...."you have to have the right tools for the right job". And the best tools made are the old tools. So here are a few ideas from the wonderful vintage shops on Etsy.
The first tool you will need is a shovel to turn the dirt. The ShabbyChicLife has the perfect shovel for that.
Now if you have a small garden in pots or flowers in pots you will need a small shovel or trowel as they are called and a claw rake. Outdated has the perfect tools for this job.
Now....we have to water our vegetables and flowers and VintageSouthwest can (no pun intended!) help with this.
No gardening job is clean so you will need a good apron to help keep that dirt off of you and CoffeeColorCadillac has the perfect apron for you.
Last, but not least.....when the flowers need to be cut and the vegetables need to be harvested you will need something to carry them in. TheGayDivorcee has the perfect basket for that.

Here is what I made this week. I finally got around to making a cover for my chaise with some vintage chenille bedspreads and then made this pillow to go with it.
